The Turtles grew up together in California and originally started a group called The Crossfires. Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman were best buds but Mark couldn’t really do anything musically so he basically acted as a roadie and played tambourine. He got tired of his lowly status and bought an alto sax which he learned how to play and soon the group drew the attention of the White Wale record label which asked them for a name change. They came up with The Turtles and their sixth chart hit was #1 on this day in 1967. It can win YOU dinner at Texas Roadhouse if you’re caller 10 when we play it again.
